Abstract

Conceptual Equivalence Translation This study reexamines the problem commonly observed in the multilingualization of thought and theory—namely, the transformation, dilution, or deviation of meaning—not as a matter of translation technique or linguistic proficiency, but as a structural problem arising from the absence of a process designed to preserve and verify meaning. This paper proposes a framework called the Conceptual Constitution, which explicitly defines, as highest-level constraints, the semantic roles fulfilled by a concept, its semantic scope, invariant conditions, and prohibited deviations. Based on this framework, the study presents a Conceptual Equivalence Translation process for transferring and verifying concepts across languages. The proposed process is structured as a sequence of state transitions:source-language state → target-language state → return-to-native-language state. Its defining feature lies in determining semantic identity through a procedural two-point comparison between the source-language state and the return-to-native-language state. This design enables verification of conceptual consistency using only the native language, even under conditions in which the target language cannot be comprehended. This study does not evaluate the naturalness or fluency of translation outputs. Rather, it presents a methodological framework for meaning quality assurance, aimed at confirming whether a thought or theory continues to exist as the same thought after undergoing translation. It is positioned not as a proposal of translation techniques, but as a foundational process design for multilingual intellectual production. This record includes both the original Japanese manuscript and an English version produced through Conceptual Equivalence Translation of the same content.
