Abstract

Planetary system classification conventionally assigns “planet” status to companions regardless of system dynamics. This study applies barycentric criteria to reclassify systems where the center of mass lies outside the primary star’s radius. When the system barycenter exceeds the stellar radius (rB > Rstar), both objects orbit a common center external to either body—the mechanical definition of a binary system. We present 16 systems meeting Second Generation Binary Stellar System (SGBSS) criteria, including well-studied systems currently classified as star-planet pairs.
