Onto-Relational Multiplexity (ORM) A New Framework for Islamic Mystical Metaphysics
Abstract
This paper proposes Onto-Relational Multiplexity (ORM) as a new theoretical framework for Islamic mysticism (ʿirfān). Expanding upon the classical metaphysical insights of Ibn al-ʿArabī, Suhrawardī, and Mullā Ṣadrā, the ORM model reconceptualizes reality not as hierarchical layers of being but as a dynamic, relational, multi-intensity field grounded in the Divine. The article argues that ORM resolves longstanding philosophical tensions in classical Sufi metaphysics, including the unity–multiplicity paradox, the epistemology of mystical unveiling (kashf), and the metaphysics of subject–object relationality. Integrating perspectives from classical Sufism, phenomenology, and contemporary relational ontology, ORM advances a new academic paradigm capable of bridging traditional ʿirfān with modern metaphysical discourse. Keywords: Islamic mysticism, Ibn al-ʿArabī, Mullā Ṣadrā, ontology, Sufism, relational metaphysics, phenomenology, ORM, waḥdat al-wujūd
