Abstract

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is not only a computational methodology borrowed from computational linguistics to analyze and process human languages, but it is also a computational methodology deeply rooted in information theory and the foundations of computation. Building upon some of the fundamental laws from information theory and computational linguistics, I would like to extrapolate and infer some of patterns and boundaries of communication in the Universe, categorizing them from impossible, improbable, to possible and probable. This talk is not about using large language models (LLMs) to decipher or talk to ETI, but rather about collating fundamental principles and observations from information theory and NLP (which is a larger field than LLMs and deep learning) in order to broadly categorize technosignatures from impossible to probable.
