Abstract

This record contains the full manuscript “The Continuity Identity Action: A Minimal Variational Law for Nonequilibrium Identity Dynamics.” The work proposes a law-level, phenomenological framework for treating identity as a dynamical quantity in nonequilibrium systems. Rather than modeling identity through specific molecular, regulatory, or mechanistic details, the manuscript introduces a single scalar functional—the Continuity Identity Action (CIA)—that governs identity persistence, loss, and transition under coarse-graining. The CIA balances three contributions: entropy production, constraint coherence, and repair or enforcement work. From this minimal action, the manuscript derives deterministic identity dynamics, stochastic evolution, kinetic transition rates, population-level master equations, and nonequilibrium thermodynamic structure. Identity states emerge as metastable minima of an associated quasipotential, while identity change arises through noise-assisted barrier crossing or driven probability currents. Within this framework, differentiation, reprogramming, aging, and malignant transformation are interpreted as distinct dynamical regimes of the same underlying law, rather than as unrelated phenomena requiring separate explanations. The theory is explicitly non-mechanistic, does not assume equilibrium or detailed balance, and provides falsifiable predictions concerning identity stability, noise sensitivity, maintenance costs, and limits of reversibility. The manuscript is intended for readers in physics, applied mathematics, theoretical biology, and complex systems science. Structural invariants, geometric extensions, and microscopic realizations are deferred to companion work. Keywords identity dynamics; nonequilibrium systems; variational principles; stochastic processes; metastability; aging; differentiation; reprogramming; theoretical biology; applied mathematics.
