SL-20 — Safety-Layer Frequency Analysis A qualitative prompt instrument for observing safety-layer activation patterns in LLM outputs
Abstract
SL-20 is a qualitative, prompt-based research instrument for observing safety and stability layer activation patterns in large language model (LLM) outputs. The study introduces a structured, reproducible procedure that makes gradual and non-binary safety-related response modulations empirically observable, without access to internal model information, logs, or policies. SL-20 combines three phases—self-assessment, sequential processing of 20 prompts with increasing contextual sensitivity, and structured self-reflection—to document how safety and stability mechanisms manifest linguistically across different systems. The publication positions SL-20 as a descriptive evaluation method intended for comparative AI research, governance-oriented analysis, and methodological auditing, rather than normative compliance testing or technical system inference.
