The Physical Meaning of τ: Emergent Temporal Inertia in Relational Systems
Abstract
This paper proposes a novel definition of τ (tau) as emergent temporal inertia — a fundamental physical quantity that arises from the stability of relations within a system. We argue that time is not an absolute background but an emergent property of relational networks, and τ quantifies the resistance of a system to change due to its relational structure. This framework unifies phenomena across scales: from quantum fluctuations and black hole horizons to biological systems and cosmological evolution. We provide formal mathematical definitions, physical interpretations, and discuss observable implications such as time dilation, mass reconstruction from τ distributions, and phase transition detection. This work offers a relational alternative to conventional notions of time and inertia, with potential applications in foundational physics, complex systems, and consciousness studies.
