VORTEX STRUCTURES IN PLASMA SYSTEMS: EMERGENCE, BOUNDARY INSTABILITY, AND COHERENCE-ALIGNED ALTERNATIVES
Abstract
Vortices appear frequently in plasma systems, from magnetic confinement devices to astrophysical flows. They are often treated as functional tools for confinement, mixing, or energy extraction. This paper reframes the vortex as an emergent structural expression rather than a primary generative mechanism. Drawing from magnetohydrodynamics, stability theory, and coherent-field modeling, the paper examines why vortices form, why they often concentrate instability at boundaries, and why architectures that attempt to “drive” vortices tend to inherit predictable failure modes. The discussion highlights coherence-aligned field geometries as a contrasting class of designs in which organized circulation emerges naturally rather than being forced through shear.
