Functional Nomadic Realism
Abstract
Knowledge of complex systems emerges not from extracting universal laws but from following their singular material trajectories in real time. Integrating Deleuze-Guattari (nomadic vs royal science), Latour (quasi-objects), and Harman (constitutive opacity), FNR proposes: matter is autonomous, observation is itinerant, interaction is negotiational, value is biological. Four operations: Nomadic Perception (follow the singular trajectory); Emergent Grammar (extract causal propositions from material flow); Entropic Negotiation (functional equilibria where both actor and system gain); Biological Value (residual capacity to transform energy, not fiscal cost). Royal science seeks universal laws and fails catastrophically when they break. Nomadic science follows local singularities and degrades gracefully. FNR applies to industrial systems, ecosystems, economic flows—anywhere perfect control is impossible. New professional figure: Industrial Biological Linguist. Not mechanic, engineer, or data scientist. Semanticist who reads material trajectories, negotiates futures, listens to systems as quasi-subjects with agency. FNR vs Machine Learning: ML learns universal functions from history. FNR follows the singular case in the present. They complement: ML accelerates pattern recognition; FNR provides the epistemological frame. Implementation roadmap: Phase 1 (theoretical clarification); Phase 2 (pilot case studies on industrial/biological systems); Phase 3 (scalability to multi-level systems); Phase 4 (scientific dissemination and open-source toolkit). Core insight: The dominant paradigm rests on control. FNR proposes negotiation. Not domination, not surrender—listening to matter's autonomy while pursuing our needs.
