Senseshift: A Shift in the Level of Observation in Strategic Engagement with the Future
Abstract
This white paper introduces senseshift as a conceptual lens for rethinking how strategic judgment emerges under conditions of uncertainty, complexity, and contested futures. Rather than proposing a new method, framework, or decision tool, senseshift directs attention to a prior layer of perception and judgment through which certain futures become visible, discussable, and actionable while others remain unnoticed. Building on critical engagements with sensemaking, strategy, and futures studies, the paper argues that many limitations of contemporary decision frameworks do not stem from insufficient analysis or execution, but from unexamined preconditions that shape what is perceived as relevant in the first place. Senseshift is positioned as a boundary concept that clarifies these preconditions without prescribing operational steps or managerial interventions. The paper deliberately avoids premature operationalization. Its aim is not to replace existing frameworks or planning approaches, but to offer a conceptual grounding for future research, reflective practice, and strategic inquiry—particularly in contexts where uncertainty cannot be reduced and judgment precedes calculation.
