Second-Order Coherence Science-Foundational Declaration
Abstract
Second-Order Coherence Science (SOCS) is introduced as a foundational second-order epistemic discipline concerned with the conditions under which systems and the theories, models, metrics, and governance structures used to describe and steer them, remain epistemically valid, orientable, and responsibility-bearing under sustained drift, decision pressure, and ethical load. SOCS does not propose empirical explanations, predictive models, optimization strategies, or applied frameworks. It establishes second-order conditions of epistemic validity by which first-order scientific, technical, institutional, and organizational systems may be assessed with respect to truthfulness over time, rather than short-term functionality or stability. Within SOCS, truthfulness is defined as sustained epistemic validity under drift and is explicitly distinguished from correspondence, consensus, or metric performance. Ethical integrity is treated not as a moral or normative prescription, but as a structural condition of epistemic validity in reflexive systems, denoting whether responsibility remains internal to the system’s reflexive scope under pressure. This document constitutes the authoritative Foundational Declaration of Second-Order Coherence Science and establishes the first formal articulation of SOCS under this designation. It is intentionally non-operational and sets the boundary conditions under which subsequent theoretical, applied, or domain-specific work may be coherently situated, without authorizing or prescribing such work. Any invocation of SOCS that seeks to operationalize, instrumentalize, or externalize responsibility while invoking coherence violates the foundational conditions articulated herein.
