Abstract

The herbal industry is expanding rapidly, driven by demand for natural remedies and traditional medicine systems. Despite centuries of use, many formulations lack scientific validation, limiting their acceptance in evidence-based healthcare. Clinical research is crucial to address this gap by evaluating the safety, efficacy and quality of herbal medicines. Unlike synthetic drugs, herbal products face unique challenges such as variability in raw materials, complex phytoconstituent interactions and standardization issues. Well-designed clinical trials provide therapeutic credibility, support regulatory approval, ensure patient safety and enhance global market trust. International bodies including WHO, US FDA, EMA, and India’s AYUSH highlight the necessity of clinical validation for herbal products. Successful trials on Ashwagandha, Curcumin and Ginkgo biloba show how research can convert traditional wisdom into evidence-based medicine. Emerging tools such as biomarkers, pharmacogenomics and digital health further strengthen this process. Thus, clinical research remains the cornerstone of the herbal industry, securing its future in global healthcare.
