Principles and Proper Timing of Toothbrushing
Abstract
This article aims to present practical principles and proper timing of toothbrushing after meals, emphasizing the role of time intervals and types of consumed food in determining safe brushing practices. Based on a synthesis of oral health and dental public health guidelines, brushing immediately after meals especially following the consumption of sugary foods, soft drinks, or acidic items may contribute to cumulative enamel wear and dentin hypersensitivity over time. The article proposes clear and applicable recommendations: rinsing the mouth with water immediately after eating, waiting at least 20–30 minutes before brushing and brushing gently once an appropriate interval has passed. These guidelines support long-term oral health and are suitable for daily application at the individual, family and community levels.
