Abstract

In recent years, several controversies involving cultural institutions in China have exposed systemic vulnerabilities in the governance of public heritage, particularly the personalization of state power in the absence of transparency and institutional checks. The Nanjing Museum incident, which centers on the handling and appraisal of valuable artifacts, sparked widespread public debate. Yet much of the discussion became polarized around notions of “patriotism,” obscuring the structural issues at stake. This study is written against that backdrop, aiming to move beyond emotional narratives and examine the incident through the lens of institutional dynamics and power privatization. It seeks to reveal how public cultural assets can be appropriated under legitimizing rhetoric and to explore the broader implications for cultural governance and the preservation of public interest.
