Niosomal Films: Emerging Platforms for Enhanced Antidiabetic Therapy
Abstract
Niosomal strips are becoming a popular drug-delivery option because they break down quickly in the mouth, are simple to use, and help improve patient comfort and cooperation. When niosomes small vesicles made from non-ionic surfactants are added into these strips, they can support drug stability and improve solubility as well as bioavailability. These vesicles are able to hold both water-soluble and fat-soluble antidiabetic drugs, including metformin and glibenclamide. By protecting the drug from early breakdown, niosomes can also help provide a more controlled release. When the film is placed under the tongue, it dissolves fast and the nanosized vesicles move across the oral mucosa, which is highly vascular. This route avoids first-pass metabolism and gives a quicker therapeutic response. Recent work has shown that such strips can improve physicochemical qualities, support better blood glucose control, and offer good patient acceptability. With new approaches like microfluidics, QbD, AI-supported optimization, and plant-based vesicular systems, Niosomal strips hold strong potential for creating safer and more effective antidiabetic treatments. This study highlights their composition, preparation, evaluation methods, mechanism, and future scope as an alternative to conventional dosage forms.
