Abstract

For most of history, human societies were built on a single assumption: That the world is not inherently trustworthy. Because of this assumption, societies required: Borders Laws Religions Police Administrative control Authority Certificates Credit scores All of these functioned as devices that made trust possible in a world where trust itself could not be assumed. At the foundation of these systems was one persistent belief: “Humans can lie, deceive, and betray.” Therefore, institutions existed as mechanisms to enforce trust. But in the next civilization — this premise reverses.
