Abstract

This article presents the historical and artistic background of the “Thailand–Japan Centennial Relations” commemorative medal, issued in 1987 (B.E. 2530) by the Treasury Department of Thailand to mark the centennial of diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Thailand and Japan (1887–1987). The medal was designed to depict the Grand Palace of Bangkok and the Tokyo Imperial Palace, symbolizing the royal friendship between the two nations since the reigns of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) and Emperor Meiji. It is among the rarest diplomatic medals ever produced in Thailand, with only one proof silver coin, five silver coins and 3,315 toned copper coins minted. Beyond its numismatic value, the medal stands as a timeless witness to the enduring friendship, cultural harmony and royal respect between the two nations across a century of mutual understanding.
