Abstract

This release contains the python code to compute the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) designed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) according to the guidelines made available in 2018. To help understanding what the code does, the repository contains an application of SVI for census tracts in the States of New York and New Jersey affected by 2012 Hurricane Sandy, as in Rufat et al., 2019. Specifically, there are input tables of socio-economic indicators from US Census Bureau and output tables with intermediate calculations and the final SVI. The code can be applied to any set of geographies, as long as all the census tables for the geographies are downloaded from the US Census Bureau website (https://data.census.gov/table). The output table can be joined to a shapefile of geographies in a GIS environment to map SVI and its themes. Full Changelog: https://github.com/federicoantolini/socvuln/commits/v1.1
