Oak Island as Maritime Infrastructure: Documented Archaeological Evidence
Abstract
Archaeological and survey investigations on Oak Island, Nova Scotia, have documented engineered features and artifacts from the 17th–18th centuries, including stone-lined drainage channels at Smith’s Cove and fibrous materials associated with water management. While some commentators have suggested European influence, including French colonial activity, the precise cultural origin of these features remains uncertain. This report summarizes verifiable archaeological findings and provides historical context regarding French colonial presence in Acadia and Nova Scotia. Interpretive claims are clearly separated from documented evidence.
