Abstract

English Description of the Thesis This thesis re-examines human creation narratives and global flood traditions as expressions of a shared primordial human memory, rather than isolated myths, psychological symbols, or products of simple cultural transmission.Using a critical comparative methodology that integrates anthropology, history, sacred-text analysis, and collective memory studies, the research demonstrates that the convergence of these narratives across geographically and temporally distant cultures extends beyond thematic similarity to include narrative structure, chronological sequencing, ethical causality, and symbolic function. The study offers a systematic critique of reductionist explanatory models, including:Cultural Diffusionism,Jungian Archetypal Theory,Radical Structuralism, and the Laurasian Mythology model proposed by Michael Witzel, arguing that while each approach illuminates certain dimensions of myth formation, none sufficiently explains the structural stability, moral coherence, and global persistence of creation and flood narratives without acknowledging a foundational event-memory.The thesis ultimately proposes a synthetic interpretive model, in which exceptional natural events, early human experience, collective memory, and symbolic codification interact to preserve historical meaning through mythic form. Creation and flood narratives are thus understood as humanity’s earliest epistemological framework for explaining existence, catastrophe, and moral order—rooted in memory rather than imaginative invention.
