Beyond the Fairy Tale: The Inconsistencies of the Present Scientific Ontology

Contemporary science rests on a largely unexamined metaphysical story: that reality began as a dead, mindless sea of particles and fields, and that life, mind, and meaning are late-age accidents of blind process. This "matter-first" narrative coexists with spectacular empirical success—but its metaphysical assumption is by no means an empirical result. It is an interpretive layer that demands belief in a series of extraordinary, unrepeated miracles: extreme cosmological fine-tuning, the spontaneous appearance of vast amounts of functional information at the origin of life, and the unexplained emergence of conscious experience from non-experience. The Unified Play of Consciousness (UPC) proposes a different starting point: Universal Awareness (UA) as the fundamental axiom. Within UPC, Universal Intelligence (UI) and the Universal Field (UF) are inseparable aspects of UA in activity. Physical laws, matter, and spacetime are stabilized expressions of Consciousness/Adaptive Intelligence (AdI), while living systems are their high-coherence configurations. UPC argues that such a consciousness-first ontology is more parsimonious and better aligned with several empirical asymmetries than the standard materialist narrative: Fine-tuning of constants and initial conditions for life. The information burden of abiogenesis (origin of life) and functional information in genomes. The pervasiveness of intelligent-seeming behaviour in minimal living systems ("basal intelligence"). The hard problem of consciousness—the explanatory gap between physical processes and experience. The unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics and the informational character of modern physics. UPC sharpens three points often left vague in consciousness-first proposals: The "no direct observation" asymmetry: we have endless evidence of consciousness shaping matter, and zero direct evidence of mindless processes generating experience. A defensible notion of parsimony: UPC uses one primitive (Awareness) to account for what materialism treats as several mutually inexplicable primitives (matter, laws, consciousness, etc.). Falsifiability and counter-evidence: we state concrete conditions under which UPC's intelligence-first reading would be empirically disfavoured. The goal is not to replace physics, biology, or neuroscience, but to surface their unacknowledged metaphysical foundation.
