The Drake-Kuramoto Synthesis: Phase Transitions in the Emergence of Galactic Civilization Networks
Abstract
The Drake equation (1961) decomposes the question of extraterrestrial intelligence intoseven probabilistic factors, while reduction networks in nonequilibrium physics trace limitingprocedures connecting models of order formation. We propose a synthesis: each stage of theDrake equation corresponds to a phase transition in a reduction network, from cosmologi-cal structure formation through biological self-organization to social synchronization. Thisframework yields three novel contributions: (1) a physical interpretation of the Drake pa-rameters as critical thresholds in Stuart-Landau bifurcations, (2) an analysis of civilizationallongevity Lin terms of saturation parameter breakdown (β →0), and (3) a reformulation ofthe Fermi paradox as the question of why galactic-scale Kuramoto synchronization has notoccurred. We argue that the mathematics of emergenceattraction, instability, symmetrybreaking, saturationprovides a substrate-independent framework for understanding theconditions under which communicating civilizations arise and persist.
