Quantum Gravity As Constraint
Abstract
The search for a theory of quantum gravity has been hindered by the absence of organizing principles that remain stable across changes in microscopic description. Despite deep disagreements over ontology, many otherwise incompatible approaches converge on a common thermodynamic structure: area-bounded entropy, horizon thermodynamics, delayed information recovery, and the emergence of a thermodynamic arrow of time. This work argues that these features arise not from specific quantum microphysics, but from the role of spacetime geometry in constraining which correlations are dynamically admissible. Working within semiclassical general relativity and statistical mechanics, entropy is reinterpreted as the logarithm of admissible phase space rather than as a count of microscopic disorder. Gravity is treated primarily as enforcing capacity limits on correlation, rather than as a force requiring quantization. Within this framework, horizons function as dynamic interfaces that regulate admissibility. They render correlations temporarily inaccessible without destroying them, preserving global unitarity while accounting for apparent information loss, Page-time behavior, and horizon entropy bounds. Cosmological expansion is described as an irreversible relaxation of geometric constraint, opening admissible phase space in stages and providing a natural origin for the thermodynamic arrow of time without invoking time-asymmetric microphysics or special initial conditions. The paper does not propose a new microscopic theory of quantum gravity. Instead, it identifies a set of structural constraints that any viable quantum theory of gravity must inherit if it is to reproduce the observed thermodynamic behavior of gravitating systems. These include area-bounded entropy as a capacity limit, horizon-mediated regulation of information, irreversible growth of admissible phase space, and preservation of global unitarity despite local inaccessibility. By making these constraints explicit, the work reframes quantum gravity as a problem of constraint inheritance rather than one of quantization alone. About the series. Admissibility Physics derives the Standard Model gauge group, fermion content, quantum formalism, Lorentzian spacetime, the Einstein field equations, the cosmological constant, and the neutrino, strong-CP, and dark sectors from a single assumption — that enforcement is finite at every causally connected region — with zero free parameters. The core derivation runs Papers 0–11; the extension papers carry the individual sectors. Each paper's main text and Technical Supplement is deposited separately, and every quantitative claim traces to a named, executable check in the public theorem bank (over 3,800 bank-registered theorems across roughly 450 modules, 48 quantitative predictions).
