Beyond the Fairy Tale: The Hidden Story Behind Science's Greatest Mystery (Introductory Guide)
Abstract
This essay argues that contemporary science, despite its extraordinary predictive power, often rests on an unstated metaphysical narrative: reality is fundamentally non-experiential matter/energy in spacetime governed by mindless laws, with life, mind, and meaning appearing late as accidental byproducts. The paper's core claim is not that physics, biology, or neuroscience are wrong—but that the default matter-first interpretation is an added philosophical layer, not an empirical result. Unified Play of Consciousness (UPC) offers an alternative starting point: Universal Awareness (UA) as the axiom. In UPC, Universal Intelligence (UI) and the Universal Field (UF) are inseparable aspects of UA in activity, and "physical reality" is a stabilized expression of Consciousness/Adaptive Intelligence (AdI)—the UI↔UF coupling dynamics. From this standpoint, the essay highlights recurring "asymmetries" where the matter-first story must import extraordinary, unrepeated leaps: fine-tuning, the functional-information burden at the origin of life, basal adaptive intelligence in minimal organisms, and the hard problem of consciousness, alongside the deeply informational/mathematical character of physics. A central argumentative lever is the observation asymmetry: we have pervasive evidence that experience and intention can shape physical outcomes (at least through organisms and agency), but no directly observed case of non-experiential matter generating experience—only correlations. The paper then makes its bridge relation explicit via the dependency scaffold: A · (AdI | I) → F, where instantiated awareness (A), adaptive intelligence (AdI), a constraint grammar (I), and stabilized expression/form (F) describe how determinate reality emerges without reducing experience to an afterthought.
