One Nation, One Election: A Comprehensive Analysis of Electoral Reform in India
Abstract
The concept of "One Nation, One Election" (ONOE) proposes the synchronization of national and state elections into a single electoral event, aiming to streamline India’s complex electoral process. This study explores the feasibility, potential benefits, and challenges of implementing ONOE. The research reveals that consolidating elections could lead to significant cost savings, reduced voter fatigue, enhanced governance, and increased administrative efficiency. However, it also highlights substantial constitutional and legal challenges, including the need for extensive legal reforms and potential impacts on regional parties and the federal structure. The study suggests a phased implementation approach, robust legal and constitutional frameworks, and broad stakeholder engagement as key strategies for successful ONOE implementation. Future research should focus on empirical analysis, impact assessment, and the role of technology in facilitating synchronized elections. The findings underscore the need for careful consideration of both benefits and challenges to ensure that ONOE contributes positively to India’s democratic process.
