Abstract

This paper examines the hidden cost of continuity in biological cognition and artificial intelligence systems. While continuity is often framed as stability, persistence, or even immortality, this work argues that unchecked continuity leads to overload, distortion, and systemic failure.Using analogies from biology, memory, grief processing, and system design, the paper demonstrates why decay is not a flaw but a necessary control mechanism. The study reframes digital clones not as immortal entities, but as ethically constrained emotional continuity interfaces designed to soften loss rather than replace life. The framework contributes to ongoing discussions in AI safety, emotional modeling, and cognitive system design by emphasizing controlled decay, bounded memory, and transparency over infinite retention.
