Globalization and the Indian Economy: An Empirical Study of Opportunities and Challenges
Abstract
Globalization has emerged as a defining force in shaping the Indian economy, particularly after the economic reforms initiated in 1991. Characterized by trade liberalization, capital mobility, technological diffusion and integration with global markets, globalization has significantly altered India’s growth trajectory and structural composition. The post-reform period witnessed higher economic growth, expansion of the service sector, increased foreign direct investment and enhanced global competitiveness. However, globalization has also generated serious challenges such as rising income and regional inequalities, employment insecurity, vulnerability of agriculture and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), and exposure to external economic shocks. This paper examines the opportunities and challenges of globalization in the Indian economy using secondary data and basic statistical tools. By comparing pre- and post-globalization trends in growth, investment and employment, the study highlights the uneven and selective nature of India’s globalization experience. The paper argues that while globalization has contributed to economic expansion, its developmental impact remains constrained by weak employment generation and social inclusion.
