Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative force in the global economy, significantly influencing production systems, governance mechanisms, and social structures. In the Indian context, the evolution of AI forms an important part of the country’s post-independence journey towards modernization and digital transformation. Although India’s engagement with advanced technologies began gradually after independence in 1947, the rapid growth of digital infrastructure, data availability, and policy initiatives in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries has accelerated AI adoption across sectors. This research paper examines the role of Artificial Intelligence in shaping India’s digital economy after independence, with a focus on its major achievements, persistent challenges, and future prospects. The study is based entirely on secondary data collected from government reports, policy documents, research articles, and institutional publications. The findings indicate that AI has contributed significantly to economic efficiency, service delivery, innovation, and global competitiveness. However, issues such as data privacy, skill gaps, digital divide, ethical concerns, and regulatory limitations continue to pose challenges. The paper concludes by emphasizing the need for inclusive policies, skill development, ethical governance, and sustainable AI deployment to strengthen India’s digital economy in the years ahead.
