Abstract

This paper examines women empowerment and gender equality in post-Independence India through an urban–rural lens. It also highlights the progress achieved and the challenges that persist. Since 1947, India has introduced constitutional guarantees, legal reforms, and development programs aimed at promoting gender justice and reducing disparities. Urban women have benefited from greater access to education, employment opportunities, and modern values. This is enabling enhanced economic independence, political participation, and decision-making autonomy. In contrast, rural women continue to face structural barriers such as patriarchy, poverty, limited access to resources, early marriage, and socio-cultural restrictions, which constrain their empowerment. The paper employs a multidisciplinary theoretical framework, drawing on feminist theory, modernization theory, and the concept of patriarchy. It analyses the complex interplay of social, economic, and cultural factors affecting women in diverse settings.
