The Impossibility of Contemporary Greatness Recognition: A Structural Proof
Abstract
This paper proves that "greatness" cannot be recognized contemporaneously— it can only beattributed posthumously or at minimum after significant temporal distance. The proofproceeds from three premises: (1) greatness is defined by contribution to axiom systemtransition; (2) transitions cannot be identified from within the pre-transition axiom system; (3)contemporaries necessarily occupy the pre-transition system. Therefore, contemporariescannot recognize greatness as it occurs. What contemporaries can recognize is deviationfrom current axioms— but deviation is indistinguishable from error until the transitioncompletes. Van Gogh, Boltzmann, Semmelweis: these are not anomalies but necessaryconsequences of the structure of axiom system change. The "great person recognized in theirtime" is either (a) great by the old axioms (not a paradigm shifter), or (b) retroactivelyconstructed as having been recognized.
