Improving Activity and Mathematics Learning Outcomes Through the Mind Map Method for Grade VIII Students at SMP Negeri 1 Sinunukan
Abstract
This study aims to: (1) increase student activity through the application of the mind map learning method, and (2) improve mathematics learning outcomes through the application of the mind map learning method. This research is a Classroom Action Research (CAR) conducted at SMP Negeri 1 Sinunukan with Grade VIII-A students, totaling 30 individuals. Data collection techniques used include interviews, observation, documentation, and tests. The data analysis technique in this research is descriptive quantitative. The data analyzed consisted of observation results on student activity and student learning outcome test scores. The research findings conclude that: (1) the application of the mind map method in mathematics learning can increase student learning activity. The improved student activity includes increased attention to the teacher's explanations, more active note-taking of key points, increased initiative in placing the main topic (plane triangles) at the center of the paper, better organization of supporting branches from the main topic, ability to create connections between the main topic and supporting branches using symbols, creating keywords for each symbol, and using colorful pens for symbolism; (2) the application of the mind map method in mathematics learning can improve student learning outcomes. This is indicated by the increase in the average test scores at the end of each cycle. From Cycle I to Cycle II, scores consistently increased, with the lowest score rising from 62 (Cycle I) to 67 (Cycle II). The highest score in both cycles was 100. The class average increased from 75.73 (Cycle I) to 83.33 (Cycle II). The completion percentage also rose from 66.67% (Cycle I) to 83.33% (Cycle II).
