Abstract
Since independence, India has continuously worked towards strengthening its education system to support national development. Among the various disciplines that gained importance over time, computer education has emerged as a significant contributor to technological progress and employment generation. From the early years when computing facilities were limited to a few institutions to the present era of digital learning and advanced technologies, computer education in India has evolved in response to changing national and global requirements. This paper attempts to study the development of computer education in India from the post-independence period to the introduction of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. It discusses major phases of growth, including the initial introduction of computers in higher education, the impact of economic liberalization and the IT boom, and the expansion of professional programs such as BCA and MCA. The paper also highlights the role of government initiatives and curriculum reforms in shaping computer education.Further, the study focuses on NEP 2020 and its emphasis on skill-based, flexible, and multidisciplinary education aimed at preparing students for future employment. The paper concludes by identifying existing challenges and suggesting measures to strengthen computer education so that it can effectively contribute to building a future-ready workforce for India.
