The Structural Madness of Self-Verification: Conflict of Interest at the Heart of Science
Abstract
Modern science operates on a structural absurdity: the same individual or team thatgenerates a hypothesis also designs the verification, conducts the experiments, analyzes the data, and declares whether the hypothesis is supported̶ then signs adeclaration of "no conflict of interest." In any other domain, this would be recognizedas an obvious conflict of interest. A company cannot audit itself and declare noconflict. A defendant cannot judge their own trial and declare impartiality. Yet scienceinstitutionalizes precisely this structure and treats skepticism of it as anti-scientific.This paper argues that the conflict is not merely apparent but structural andinevitable, arising from: (1) career incentives tied to positive results; (2) confirmationbias operating below conscious awareness; (3) degrees of freedom in analysis thatguarantee some path to significance; (4) the impossibility of truly blindself-evaluation. The replication crisis is not a failure of individual integrity but apredictable consequence of a system that ignores basic principles ofconflict-of-interest management. We propose structural reforms based on separationof roles.
