Mathematics as Tool, Not Truth: Against the Cargo Cult of Cosmic Mathematics

The claim that "mathematics is the language of the universe" or that mathematicaltruths are "discovered, not invented" is a category error elevated to metaphysics.Mathematics is not a body of truths about reality; it is a technology for derivingconsequences from chosen axioms. The process is: (1) select axioms based on utilityor interest; (2) apply inference rules to derive theorems; (3) use theorems as tools formodeling phenomena. At no point does "truth about the universe" enter. Theeffectiveness of mathematics in physics is not evidence of cosmic mathematicalreality; it is evidence that we have selected axioms whose derived theorems matchpatterns we observe̶a process of fitting, not discovering. The reverence formathematics as cosmic truth is cargo cult science: imitating the forms of knowledge(rigor, proof, certainty) without understanding the substance (axiom selection isarbitrary; theorems are conditional on axioms; applicability is empirical, notnecessary).
