Uncomputability and the Death of Laplace's Demon: Why the Future Cannot Be Calculated
Abstract
Laplace's Demon̶the hypothetical intelect that could predict the entire future givencomplete knowledge of the present̶has been chalenged by chaos theory, quantummechanics, and computational complexity. This paper provides a more fundamentalrefutation: the future is not computable because the future does not yet exist.Emergence is continuous: new structures, new axiom systems, new categories arecreated through phase transitions that introduce genuine novelty. What wil existcannot be computed from what exists because computation operates on existingstates, and emergent states are not encodable in pre-emergence terms. The Demonfails not due to practical limitations (chaos, precision, complexity) but due toontological impossibility: there is no fact of the matter about the future to compute. The future is created through emergence, not computed from the present.
