HypeReader Mobile: A Bounded-Latency Framework for Interactive Hyperspectral Data Inspection (Software & Datasets)
Abstract
This repository contains the official software implementation, source code, and benchmark datasets associated with the research paper "HypeReader Mobile: A Bounded-Latency Framework for Interactive Hyperspectral Data Inspection", submitted to Geo-spatial Information Science. Abstract Interactive "tap-to-spectrum" inspection is a key step in field and operational remote-sensing workflows, yet it is often unreliable on commodity smartphones because standard cube layouts make per-query I/O, decoding cost, and peak memory unpredictable. This work presents HypeReader Mobile, a bounded-latency framework built around an explicit interaction contract: each single-pixel query performs a constant-size index lookup and decodes at most one spatial tile. We introduce the Mobile Hyperspectral Container (MHC, .mhc), which stores multi-band rasters as independently compressed 64×64 tiles with band-interleaved-by-pixel (BIP) ordering. Results demonstrate that MHC reduces storage footprint significantly (2.12x reduction on benchmark data) while ensuring sub-millisecond access latency for interactive queries. Archive Contents This persistent archive (HypeReader_Mobile_v1.0.zip) contains: apk/: The compiled Android application installer (HypeReader_Mobile.apk). datasets/: The benchmark hyperspectral dataset (Indian Pines) converted to the .mhc format, along with its navigation preview (preview.png), ready for immediate testing on mobile devices. tools/: Python scripts for reproducibility: pack_mhc.py: Converts standard GeoTIFF files into the tile-compressed .mhc format. generate_preview.py: Generates the false-color PNG preview required for navigation. requirements.txt: List of dependencies (Rasterio, Zstandard, NumPy, Pillow). README.md: Comprehensive documentation on installation, usage, and data preparation. LICENSE: The MIT License text for the source code. Usage Instructions Download and extract the ZIP file. Install the APK on an Android device. Transfer the files from the datasets folder to the device storage. Refer to README.md for instructions on how to generate custom datasets using the provided Python scripts.
