Globalization and Indian Agriculture: Opportunities, Challenges, and Policy Implications
Abstract
Globalization has significantly influenced India’s agricultural sector, shaping production systems, trade patterns, and policy frameworks. Since the post-liberalization period of the 1990s, Indian agriculture has experienced both opportunities and challenges arising from integration into the global economy. The adoption of modern technologies, access to global markets, and inflow of foreign investment have provided opportunities for productivity enhancement, income diversification, and rural development. However, globalization has also posed challenges such as price volatility, competition from imported agricultural products, and socioeconomic disparities among farmers. This study examines the impact of globalization on Indian agriculture, highlighting its opportunities, challenges, and policy implications. Using secondary research methodology, insights from academic literature, government reports, and industry analyses are synthesized to identify strategic interventions for sustainable agricultural development. The findings underscore the importance of policy support, technology adoption, capacity building, and institutional reforms to leverage globalization for inclusive growth in the agricultural sector.
