Computing Culture: Essays on Constraint-Based PC Game Restoration
Abstract
This release collects a series of essays examining how late-1990s PC games were shaped by specific combinations of hardware, operating systems, graphics APIs, input devices, and performance constraints. Using worked examples and reference material, the essays argue that compatibility alone is insufficient for historical restoration, and that interaction depends on restoring the original performance envelope and constraint stack. The collection draws on practical reconstruction, period documentation, and lived experience to explain why many "correct" builds nonetheless produce divergent play experiences on modern systems. Version 1.0 Represents the first consolidated release of this framework as a single body of work. Version 1.1 This release incorporates a revised version of Worked Example: Motorhead (1998). Revisions clarify historical context around the game's organised online community and its relationship to evolving PC hardware, input devices, and display technologies. The conceptual framework of the collection is unchanged.
