Thermodynamic Perspective on Cosmic Acceleration: Horizon Entropy in the Context of Hints for Dark Energy Evolution from DESI DR2
Abstract
A thermodynamic perspective on cosmic acceleration is proposed, where the growth of Gibbons--Hawking horizon entropy (S ∝ A) may influence dark energy dynamics. The model does not introduce new scalar fields but relies on the thermodynamic properties of the cosmological horizon. DESI Data Release 2 (DR2, 2025) provides indications that the dark energy equation of state w(z) evolves (w(z) ≠ -1), making this interpretation particularly relevant and promising. The thermodynamic interpretation through horizon entropy growth is consistent with data indicating potential w(z) evolution as observed in DESI DR2. Near-term results from DESI Year 5 and Euclid, as well as medium-term measurements from CMB-S4 and Rubin/LSST, can test the expected consequences, including possible gradual weakening of effective dark energy in the late Universe.
