Migration in and from Uttarakhand, India: Key Drivers, Demographic Trends and Developmental Impacts
Abstract
The state of Uttarakhand, nestled in the Indian Himalayas, has witnessed a significant and sustained migration of its population from the rural hill regions towards urban centers. This paper delves into the multifaceted phenomenon of hill-to-city migration in Uttarakhand, analyzing the primary factors that compel individuals and families to leave their ancestral homes and the attractions that draw them to urban areas. Utilizing authentic data from research papers, government reports, and census records, this study examines the trends and patterns of this migration, including the demographic profile of migrants and their destinations. Furthermore, it assesses the profound socio-economic and environmental impacts of this population movement on both the sparsely populated hill regions and the burgeoning urban spaces. The findings underscore the complex interplay of economic disparities, infrastructural deficiencies, environmental stressors, and evolving social aspirations that fuel this migration. The analysis concludes by highlighting the urgent need for targeted policy interventions to address the root causes of out-migration from the hills and to foster sustainable and balanced regional development within Uttarakhand.
