Early India Provincial Topo Maps--20260106

This set of maps have been superseeded. All these maps have been renamed using the standard Survey of India number letter number (eg 83 A]14) indexing system, and are now included in the Item 7, 63k or 50k scale Maps of South Asia. Additional maps of the same type will now be included in Item 7 as they become available. ************************** In 1904, the Government of India established the India Survey Committee to "examine the methods and working of the Survey of India Department, with special reference to the preparation or revision and the reproduction of the Topographical maps of the country . . ." This committee issued its Report in 1905, calling for significant changes in many aspects of the Survey operations, including the shape of the maps (15' by 15', replacing the 15' high by 30' wide used previously), the use of color, and many operational aspects of the Survey Department. A set of index maps, issued with the 1905 report and showing the topo map numbering system used in various provincial areas is provided with this record. The set of maps in this record illustrate the maps issued prior to the 1905 report. File naming convention: Because these early topographical maps were named with a sheet number designation which did not follow a rigid numbering sequence, filing these sheets by number does not lead to a clear organization. Instead, a file-naming system based on the degree and minute coordinates of the lower-left corner of the map has been adopted on this site, and applied for all the early topo maps regardless of scale ( 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 or 32 miles per inch). Each file name is composed of the following, in sequence: 1) the ddmm degree and minute latitude of the Lower Left (LL) corner of the map; 2) the ddmm longitude of the LL corner; 3) xx the scale of the map in miles per inch; 4) Sheet yyy the map sheet number as shown on the upper left corner of the sheet; 5) Title of the Topo Survey as shown at the top center of the sheet; 6) (Year) of issue (the date of data in the map, not the date of any reprint without changes); 7) Remarks if any needed.
