Dynamical suppression of singularities in dissipative gravitational collapse
Abstract
The resolution of spacetime singularities in gravitational collapse is typically approached throughhigh-energy modifications to the Einstein-Hilbert action. In this work, we propose an effectivefield theory approach based on open quantum systems. We treat the collapsing geometry as asystem coupled to a thermal bath of horizon degrees of freedom, modeled via a covariant dissipativefluid approximation. We identify a dynamical mechanism that prevents the formation of curvaturesingularities: the dissipative backreaction, enhanced by gravitational blue-shift, drives the systemtoward a regular configuration. We present numerical simulations of the Einstein-Klein-Gordon system in the presence of a covariant dissipative term. Our results demonstrate that: (1) there exists a critical dissipation thresholdγc above which the formation of a singularity is halted; (2) the Tolman gravitational blue-shift actsas a natural feedback mechanism, activating the suppression precisely in the strong-field regime; and(3) the scheme is consistent with general covariance and energy conservation when the heat flow tothe bath is accounted for. These findings suggest that the effective viscosity of the event horizonmay act as a ”dynamical cosmic censor,” rendering singular configurations statistically inaccessible
