1000k scale Maps of South Asia

A set of about 290 historical maps of South Asia produced by the Survey of India in the India and Adjacent Countries series, at a scale of 16 miles per 1.014 inches (1:1,000,000). These maps cover the territory from Eastern Persia (Iran) to Western China and date from 1904 to 1942. Some of these maps were issued by the Survey of India, while others were issued by the Survey of Pakistan after Indian Independence in 1947. The naming convention for each file issued by the Survey of India is to first give the Sheet No then an Area Name and finally a Date of Publication in parenthesis. Filenames for maps issued by the Survey of Pakistan include a (SoP) designation at the end of the file name. An Index Map with the title "0 Index to SOI India and Adjacent Countries" showing the sheet numbering system is provided. This index map can be downloaded to assist in selecting particular maps of interest to the viewer. The maps are then listed in numerical order by sheet number. Maps for certain blocks on the index map were never published, and other blocks may be represented by more than one map of different dates. The map scans are collected from many sources, and the quality of the scans as well as the underlying paper maps is uneven. Some scans are professionally done, while others are of poor quality. On the assumption that 'some map is better than no map,' we include the poor quality scans until a better copy can be obtained.
