Hypergraph Regularity Lemmas and the Turán Density of Fano Planes
Abstract
The determination of the Turán density for the Fano plane F7 represents a landmark achievement in extremal hypergraph theory. While the classical Turán graph describes the extremal structure for graphs, the hypergraph setting introduces significant complexity due to the lack of a single universal extremal construction. This monograph explores the rigorous derivation of the Turán density (F7) = 3/4, originally conjectured by Sós and proven by de Caen and Füredi. We analyze the structural stability of the extremal configuration—the balanced complete bipartite 3-uniform hypergraph—utilizing the powerful machinery of the Hypergraph Regularity Lemma developed by Gowers, Rödl, and Skokan. We provide a detailed exposition of the interplay between quasirandom hypergraph decompositions, the Counting Lemma, and the stability method, demonstrating how these tools enforce the bipartite structure on F7-free hypergraphs of near-maximal density. Furthermore, we discuss the exact Turán number results for large n established by Keevash, Sudakov, Füredi, and Simonovits, culminating in the recent complete solution by Bellmann and Reiher.
