Definable Sets in O-Minimal Structures and the Pila-Wilkie Counting Theorem for Rational Points
Abstract
This monograph provides a rigorous examination of the Pila-Wilkie Counting Theorem, a seminal result at the intersection of model theory and Diophantine geometry. We analyze the distribution of rational points of bounded height on sets definable within o-minimal structures over the real field. The central theorem asserts that for the transcendental part of such a definable set, the number of rational points of height at most T grows sub-polynomially in T, specifically bounded by CT for any > 0. We systematically develop the theory of o-minimal structures, including cell decomposition and parameterization, which serve as the foundational machinery for the proof. Furthermore, we explore the determinant method of Bombieri and Pila, which provides the analytic engine for these estimates. The paper concludes with a discussion on the profound implications of this theorem for the André-Oort and Manin-Mumford conjectures, illustrating the power of "tame topology" in resolving classical arithmetic problems.
