Wuji as a Physical Constraint An Operational Analysis of Undifferentiated States in Physical Reality
Abstract
This paper presents a constraint-based, non-mathematical physics analysis of the Daoist concept Wuji (無極), translating it into operational terms using only established physical principles. By testing common interpretations of Wuji against causality, time, thermodynamics, measurement, information, and empirical quantum behavior, the paper demonstrates that Wuji cannot correspond to absolute nothingness, perfect symmetry, or static equilibrium, as all such states are physically impossible. Instead, the analysis shows that Wuji is most consistently interpreted as a minimally differentiated, non-equilibrium, metastable boundary condition that cannot persist and must inevitably transition into structured differentiation. The work does not claim Daoism is physics, but clarifies which interpretations of Wuji remain physically viable when constrained by modern physics.
