Abstract

This publication continues a regional study of the cantorial tradition of Zakarpattia (Transcarpathia) prior to 1944, focusing on cantors as carriers of tradition and on the mechanisms of cantorial transmission within Jewish communities. Building on an earlier framework that identified fifteen cantorial centers in the region, the present article assembles a structured fifteen-center regional dossier examining cantorial personnel, the presence of choirs or assisting singers, models of apprenticeship, stylistic profiles, and inter-city networks of influence. The study draws on heterogeneous sources, including Jewish directories, memorial literature (Yizkor books), survivor memoirs, and oral-history testimony, and introduces an explicit verification protocol distinguishing between documented evidence, corroborated memory, and analytical reconstruction. Rather than offering a biographical catalogue, the article reconstructs the infrastructural conditions that enabled cantorial transmission in Zakarpattia before its rupture in 1944, contributing to the historical study of Eastern European chazzanut and Jewish intangible cultural heritage.
