Abstract

This work examines the absence of collective memory, narrative strategies, and the unfinished historical reflection surrounding China’s Cultural Revolution in contemporary society. It argues that the official framing and educational presentation of the period have produced a selective form of forgetting, preventing meaningful accountability for systemic failures and ethical transgressions. Through cases such as Yu Luoke and the experiences of the “sent-down youth,” the study highlights how individual suffering has been marginalized within dominant narratives, revealing the lack of institutionalized remembrance. The analysis also identifies cultural and psychological mechanisms in present-day China that echo the deeper logic of the Cultural Revolution, including constrained spaces for expression, concentrated political discourse, renewed forms of mass mobilization, and intensified nationalist sentiment. The work contends that preventing the recurrence of similar tragedies requires institutionalized memory, deeper ethical introspection, and the integration of individual experiences into public narratives, enabling history to function as a foundation for societal self-repair.
