Towards a Unified Framework 4 Zero Defect Manufacturing
Abstract
The 4ZDM Cluster – White Paper, titled “Towards a Unified Framework 4 Zero-Defect Manufacturing (ZDM) – Insights, Applications, and Future Directions”, positions Zero-Defect Manufacturing as both a modern quality paradigm and a strategic lever for resilient, resource-efficient European industry. Instead of relying on end-of-line inspection and reactive corrections, the paper emphasizes in-process defect prevention supported by continuous sensing, real-time analytics, and closed-loop process optimization. This shift is framed not only as a way to reduce scrap and rework (and therefore the cost of poor quality), but also as a concrete pathway to support sustainability goals by preventing unnecessary energy and material consumption across production chains.
