DAM SAFETY AND AGRICULTURAL SUSTAINABILITY VALORIZATION OF CALCIUM CARBONATE (CaCO3) BIOMATERIAL FROM LIMNOPERNA FORTUNEI IN SOIL ACIDITY CORRECTION.PDF
Abstract
Translator The Golden Mussel (Limnoperna fortunei) is a biological invader that poses serious threats to dam safety andhydroelectric power plant operations due to biofouling, which increases operational costs and risks. Controllingthe mollusk generates a massive volume of shells, a residue rich in calcium carbonate (CaCO3). This work proposesintegrating water waste management with agricultural sustainability, transforming the residue into a biomaterialthat corrects soil acidity. Liming is an essential practice for neutralizing aluminum toxicity and optimizing pH intropical soils, such as Ultisols. Soil incubation studies with CaCO3 demonstrate pH variation with increasing doses, validating the effectiveness of calcium carbonate as a liming standardizer. The application of micronized shellscreates a high-volume economic cycle, reducing engineering liabilities for the agricultural sector (including cropssuch as soybeans) and generating revenue to subsidize the costs of mitigation and risk control in dams. Keywords: Dam Safety1; Biomaterials2; Liming3; Limnoperna fortunei4; Agricultural Sustainability5
